Halifax firefighters tackled two preventable fires on Sunday, prompting officials to send out reminders to the public.
In the morning on Dec. 7, crews were called to a home on Purcells Cove Road, near Williams Lake for reports of smoke in the house. When they arrived and brought the flames under control, it was determined the cause was a backed up fireplace.
Later the same day, firefighters were sent on a second call for a chimney blaze, this time on Preston Street.
They quickly brought the fire under control, and confirmed that it had not spread.
“With colder weather settling in, many households are turning to wood stoves, fireplaces, and other heating appliances,” Halifax Professional Fire Fighters said in a post on X.
A few tips from officials to ensure fires stay in the fireplace:
- Have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually
- Ensure your wood-burning or fuel-burning appliances are properly serviced
- Use dry, seasoned wood and never overload your stove or fireplace
- Check that smoke and CO alarms are working
Crews said that regular maintenance “goes a long way” to help prevent fires.
