It’s Emergency Preparedness Week which means officials are encouraging Nova Scotians to make sure they’re prepared in the event of emergencies.
The awareness campaign started Sunday and runs until Saturday and during that time, the province and other officials are offering up some tips for how residents can stay prepared for potential emergencies.
According to a provincial release, residents should be prepared for at least 72 hours of no power or running water following events like wildfires, hurricanes or severe winter storms.
People should also have an emergency kit on hand as well as easy access to important personal documents.
As for what an emergency kit should include, officials recommend an emergency plan, at least six litres of water per person, canned and dry foods, first aid supplies, a can opener and three day supply of prescription meds, among others.
The province went on to say vehicles should be full of gas and cell phones should be full charged.
As part of Emergency Preparedness Week, a test of the national Alert Ready system will take place on Wednesday at 1:55 p.m.
