Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for a wintry wet storm heading to Halifax Regional Municipality.

A mix of snow, but mostly rain, will dampen the city on Tuesday afternoon and continue into Wednesday.

“Based on current guidance, for the city and the coast, this is looking like mainly a rain event with minimal snow accumulation,” Allister Aalders, 95.7 NewsRadio weather specialist, said.

According to the weather agency, the potential rainfall amounts could be between 30 to 50 millimetres, and possible snowfall of 15 to 35 centimetres. Wind is expected to gust 70 to 90 km/h as the storm passes. Tuesday’s temperatures should hover around 3 C, according to Aalders, and 4 C on Wednesday.

“Confidence is increasing on where the greatest amounts of snow will occur. However, slight deviations in the track of this system could change snowfall amounts significantly,” Environment Canada notes.

For coastal areas, like Halifax, temperatures are expected to be a few degrees above zero, making it more likely it will rain than snow.

The weather agency is warning that people should consider adjusting their travel plans.

Aalders notes that December is off to an active start, as low pressure bringing the rain makes its way out later this week to prepare for cooler temperatures.

According to him, Wednesday into Thursday temperatures are anticipated to take a “nosedive.”
