A special weather statement remains in effect for the Halifax Regional Municipality.

95.7 NewsRadio weather specialist Alistair Aalders says rain and snow developing this afternoon could make for a tricky commute.

He says some of the urban areas in HRM are likely to see some snow before it changes to rain.

“The mix of rain and snow will be developing on the drive home this afternoon,” Aalders said. “Along the coast I think it does begin as rain or at least a brief period of snow changing over to rain, and a similar story in the city.”

The amount of rain is likely to be significant, with 30 to 50 millimetres expected.

“Temperatures will be above freezing overnight tonight so we see largely rain, and then mixing with some light snow Wednesday morning before the system tapers off,” Aalders said.

Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings for areas from the Annapolis Valley through northern Nova Scotia and northern Cape Breton.

Rainfall warnings have been issued for Shelburne and Yarmouth counties.

Along with the rain, those in HRM can also expect high winds. Environment Canada says northeasterly wind gusts of 70 to 90 km/h may cause tree branches to break and damage to utility lines.
