Houston absent as MLAs return to legislature this week

Legislature is set to resume on Monday after taking the week off due to March break.

After the short hiatus, MLAs return to Province House as NDP leader Claudia Chender continues to pan the provincial government over its budget cuts.

The official opposition leader is calling on the premier to pause the budget, accusing Tim Houston’s government of not conducting any economic analysis to understand the impact of the cuts it made to a number of sectors, including arts, culture and tourism.

Originally, the province announced cuts of $130 million in grants, but after severe backlash, the government reinstated $53 million of those cuts.

Meantime, one notable absence as the legislature returns will be the premier, who will be in Houston, TX, for the next few days to attend CERAweek, the world’s premier annual energy conference.

Houston says the province is working to responsibly to develop offshore resources including oil and natural gas, offshore wind and permanent carbon storage.

That conference will wrap up on Thursday.
