Haligonians hit the ice as Emera Oval opens for season

The largest artificially refrigerated outdoor skating rink east of Quebec City has now opened for the winter season.

The Emera Oval, with a skating surface equal to three NHL hockey rinks, opened on Monday afternoon at the Halifax Common.

The Oval includes an accessible washroom and wheelchair access to the ice surface, as well as parking nearby on Cogswell Street.

Some events are planned to kick off the season, including at Skate with Santa on Saturday, December 20 at 1 p.m.

The city says anyone who comes can get photos with Santa and the Grinch, although the latter is said to be a mean one.

There will also be a free evening family skate on New Year’s Eve from 10 p.m. to midnight, and starting on Jan. 5, there will be a “sensory skate” every Monday from 4 to 5 p.m., which means no music or large groups.

You can rent equipment for free at the Oval as long as you bring a valid piece of ID. Helmets are required from children 12 and under.
