Home of the first curling club in Halifax, the municipality is looking to commemorate the sport and its roots with a brand new light projection show.
Spectators can enjoy the From Pond to Podium show, which tells the story of curling, its origins, ties to Halifax, and honours local icons who made it even more popular.
The two and a half minute show will be on display on the façade of the former Halifax Memorial Library at Grafton Park from Nov. 22 to 30, the same time as the 2025 Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials are taking place in downtown Halifax. The lights show will start at dusk and run until 11 p.m. each night.
“This has been a two-year journey, getting to this moment,” Robert Belliveau, vice chair of the 2025 Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials, said in a press release. “We’ve been working on bringing the Trials to Halifax for a while now, so to know it’s finally here and that we can hit an even bigger audience with a beautiful light projection show dedicated to a sport so many of us hold dear, is the icing on the cake.”
The show is just one of many put on by the Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) as part of Delightful Downtown, a series of seasonal and cultural shows brightening up the municipality.
The light shows at Grafton Park are created by multimedia artist Nick Iwaskow of Wasko AV and are part of DHBC’s overarching winter placemaking program.
“Our goal with the light shows, as with all of our placemaking projects, is to turn a space into a place,” Jonathan Goldson, DHBC’s Placemaking Manager, said in a press release. “These light projections are meant to turn an otherwise plain building into entertainment, hopefully spreading joy during the darkest months of the year. However, some shows, like this one, have been created with more of an educational component to it, a way for us to use the platform to honour people, and past events, that have shaped Halifax.”
